Psychological Safety in Sport
The missing piece
Most people inside sport have everything they need to perform. The structure, the training hours, the objectives and the strong desire to win. Yet, something still isn't quite right. Performance plateaus, organisations push harder, athletes lose the same enjoyment and something feels off.
What is missing, consistently across every level of sport, is psychological safety.
Psychological safety is not the soft alternative to high performance. It is the condition that makes high performance last.
Many people inside environments have never heard the term psychological safety. Many who have, misunderstand it, conflating it with a lack of consequences, comfort, 'being in a good head space', or lowering standards.
Psychological safety is the feeling that you are safe enough to speak up, make mistakes, ask for help and be honest without interpersonal fear or repercussions.
In 2024, the International Olympic Committee Consensus Statement on harassment and abuse in sport identified psychological safety as a prerequisite for safe sporting environments. What it did not address was how to establish it in practice. Creating Space exists to bridge that gap, helping individuals and organisations build psychological safety into their everyday culture.
Towards a safer and more sustainable environment
Push harder. Sacrifice more. Win at all costs. It produces results. Until it produces burnout, silence, and athletes who quit.
Psychological safety is not separate from performance. It is what makes genuine, sustainable performance possible. It lives not in policies or programmes but in the smallest everyday moments between coaches and athletes, across organisations, and throughout every part of the sporting environment.
The way you communicate. The questions you ask. The space you make for someone to be a person, not just a performer.
Psychological safety is not a bonus. It is not a nice to have. It is the element that determines whether performance is sustainable, whether wellbeing is genuine, and whether athletes stay in sport long enough to reach their potential.
Most people in sport want their athletes to thrive. What Creating Space does is show them how, through education, awareness, and practical tools grounded in research and lived experience inside elite sport environments.
Let's create space for that.
